Open Source Comes to Campus: Johns Hopkins University

Students interested in getting started contributing to open source projects (in any capacity, including code, documentation, artwork, translations) are invited to this workshop, run by OpenHatch. The tools and skills that will be covered are universal and aren't typically taught in school.

For students wanting to contribute to open source projects, but not sure where to start (or what tools to use), the workshop will cover what open source is: where it came from, what makes it important, and the many ways to contribute. In addition, topics such as, the life cycle of a project bug, using IRC to get help and talk to other project contributors, how to create and submit a patch to a bug tracker for review and how to check out code stored in a revision control system and apply patches to it will be discussed.

Attendees will have hands-on experience with all of the common tools used to contribute to open source projects, and will be ready to go out and contribute to their first project. Resources to help continue practicing, and ways to find good projects and bugs for new contributors will be revealed.

OpenHatch is an open source project with the goals of lowering the barriers to entry into open source contribution and increasing diversity. Open Source Comes to Campus is a series of workshops run on college campuses to help teach students the community knowledge and technical skills to participate in globally distributed software projects.

OmniTI is a proud sponsor of Open Source Comes to Campus.
